Creating a College Bound Culture
Local community colleges are getting together to host Creating a College Bound Culture, “an event in which people can find out about registration, scholarships, financial aid and other important information related to attending a local community college.” The event, as reported by the Chronicle, will be “from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. July 21 at Hermann Square, located in downtown Houston at 901 Bagby Street.”

Clear Creek ISD revises block scheduling
“After hearing concerns from parents, Clear Creek school district officials have revised the high school block-scheduling policy to allow more flexibility for student activities,” reports the Houston Chronicle.

What does that mean? “That means that students may attend band rehearsals or varsity team practices to the same extent as an upper classman.”

Why? “School district officials decided to revisit block scheduling after
parents complained the current policy hampered students’ practices and
tryouts for sports and band activities.”

Katy ISD asked to review displine

Posted in General at 1:29 pm by Paloma Cruz

“A school watchdog group is calling for Katy Independent School District to immediately begin an examination of its discipline policy after a sixth-grader was ordered to attend alternative school for four months for writing ‘I love Alex’ on a gymnasium wall,” I read in the Chronicle.

When I first read about this I was appalled that writing an “I love X” statement on the wall could result in such a severe punishment. Then I discussed it with my sister, who is a teacher. And she gave me a different perspective. Writing on the wall is graffiti, which many school districts have to treat as gang-related activity. And they really can’t differentiate what they think may be a gang message and what they think may not be one.

That might not be the reasoning behind the punishment in Katy ISD. But it did give me another perspective I wasn’t considering.

Two Pasadena ISD teachers named Wal-Mart Teachers of the Year
– reported by the Houston Chronicle

Two Pasadena ISD teachers were recently named this year’s Wal-Mart Teachers of Year.

Pasadena High School science teacher Diane Barnes and Pasadena Memorial High School Yearbook/Journalism teacher Candace Maxwell both received a $100 Wal-Mart gift card for personal use, a $1,000 educational grant for their schools, a framed certificate of recognition and a T-shirt.

is writing on a wall the same as a terrorist threat?

Katy ISD thinks so, or at least they give the same punishment for both. I don’t understand anything about maintaining order in a school, so this makes no sense to me. A 6th grader wrote in permanent marker “I love Alex” and that has been categorized and punished as a Level 4 infraction. This has the same level of misconduct and punishment as drug possession, assault and making terroristic threats.

She’s been given a four-month assignment to an alternative school. Thankfully, the district attorney’s office opted not to prosecute her for a felony.

Does this make sense? Not to me.
