College Enrollment Slows Down

And the old news continues.

College growth slowing
Enrollment is up only slightly as the state falls short of its goal for Hispanics

– reported by the Houston Chronicle1

Enrollment in Texas colleges and universities has slowed after a period of explosive growth, according to preliminary numbers released Thursday.

The state’s Higher Education Coordinating Board reported 1,192,243 students in classes this fall — or 19,134 more than last year, a 1.6 percent increase.

The numbers, however, fall short of projections, causing concern among those promoting the state’s plan to increase enrollments to nearly 1.7 million students by 2015.

More Latinos are attending college than ever in Texas, but higher education officials want to see greater numbers because Hispanics represent the state’s fastest-growing ethnic group.

While the statewide enrollment of Hispanics rose this year by 11,119, or 3.7 percent, to 310,574 students, their numbers dropped at colleges and universities in South Texas.

Debate over School District Plan to Reward Teachers

Trustees split over teacher bonus plan
Biggest rewards would go to those in poorer schools where scores rise

– reported by the Houston Chronicle1

Houston school board trustees were divided Thursday over a plan to pay bigger cash bonuses to teachers who boost test scores among low-income students than teachers who do the same in more affluent schools.

A growing number of business-minded education reform advocates favor merit pay for educators, though teachers’ unions almost universally oppose the idea. Only a few public school systems nationally have tried linking a portion of teachers’ paychecks to their students’ test scores and there is little research to prove whether such incentives work.
