Katrina leaves many stranded students in Dallas

More than 100 Tulane University students displaced by Hurricane Katrina arrived at Southern Methodist University Wednesday, including the entire football team.

About 400 Tulane students originally were evacuated from New Orleans to Jackson State University in Jackson, Miss.
But when the remnants of Katrina struck Mississippi and knocked out power there, school officials decided to send out-of-state and international students to Dallas and Atlanta so they could try to get plane tickets home.

At least three universities in the state offered enrollment to some Tulane students. SMU has offered to enroll Tulane students from the Dallas-Fort Worth area in classes this semester with available space. Students from outside the area will be enrolled on a case-by-case basis, said SMU President R. Gerald Turner. He added that the school will consult with Tulane to work out details on assistance.
Texas Christian University said it was offering admission through Tuesday to undergraduates from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Rice said it was offering Houston-area undergraduates enrolled at Tulane admission for fall classes as space is available and with no out-of-pocket expenses if the students had already paid fall tuition at Tulane.
The aftermath of this natural disaster has hit on so many levels. Businesses have been destroyed, homes have been destroyed, lives have been lost… a city many very well never recover from it. However, life does have to go on and thousands upon thousands of people have to try to recover. Students are just a few of them.
